國語辭典道家指脫去凡胎而成仙。《紅樓夢．第一○四回》：「大凡成仙的人，或是肉身去的，或是脫胎去的。」
比喻一事物由另一事物孕育變化而產生。如宋時李清照〈一翦梅〉中的「此情無計可消除，才下眉頭，卻上心頭。」乃脫胎於范仲淹〈御街行〉的「都來此事，眉間心事，無計相迴避」。此種詩文上的模仿即屬脫胎現象。
