國語辭典古時就地畫一範圍作為監牢，使犯人站立其中以示懲罰。《文選．司馬遷．報任少卿書》：「故有畫地為牢，勢不可入。」後用以比喻只准在限定的範圍內活動。元．岳伯川《鐵拐李．第一折》：「他每都指山賣磨，將百姓畫地為牢。」也作「畫地為獄」。
